José Rodrigues (1936) conducted his artistic studies at the School of Fine Arts of Oporto where he finished the Sculpture course in 1963. In Porto he founded and chaired the Cooperativa de Ensino Artístico Árvore, a cultural reference in Porto since 1963. He also became attached to the Minho region, where he recovered the São Paio Convent in Vila Nova de Cerveira and helped to promote the International Biennial Art Exhibition of Cerveira, established in 1978. Besides sculpture, he was also dedicated to other forms of art, as illustration of books of writers and poets (such as Eugénio de Andrade, Jorge de Sena, Vasco Graça Moura and Albano Martins), and theater scenography.
He bought, in 2008, the Fábrica Social, an old hat factory, where he established his Foundation, home and workshop. He died on September 10, 2016, before reaching 80 years of age. These pictures were taken during the tribute to the artist, prepared by the Municipality of Porto and the Foundation José Rodrigues, which took place on October 28th. During the event it was also launched the book “José Rodrigues – Esculturas na cidade do Porto” Colecção ASA DE ANJO.
